Are you all ready for the year ahead? I know I am. And what better way to start things off than our yearly math puzzle to ring in the new year 2023. Yes, that’s right – a math puzzle. This one can be solved by anyone with a little logic and problem-solving skills. Ready to give it a try? Then, let’s get started.

**MATH PUZZLE FOR NEW YEAR 2023**

We have two math puzzles this year where we use the number 2023 as the math number.

**1. WHAT IS a MATHEMATICAL equation that EQUALS 2023 ?**

Can you create a mathematical equation that yields the number 2023 using only the digits 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 in that order? Only the four basic mathematical operators can be used (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Additionally, you are free to use as many parenthesis as you want. But, each digit can be used once only.

**2. YEARLY MATH PUZZLE 2023 **

Since the past couple of years, we have been doing our yearly math puzzle. The challenge is to create an equation for all the numbers from 1 to 20 using only the digits of the current year, 2023.

For example, we can write the digit 1 as 2 + 0 + 2 – 3 , similarly we can write the digit 2 as 2 + (2 + 3 ) x 0 and so on

There are certain rules to follow

- You can only use the digits 2, 0, 2, 3.
- The expression must contain all four digits.
- The four digits can be used in the expression in any order.
- The operators +, -, x, /, (raised to a power), factorial, square root, and parentheses are all valid.

Here is a solution for the first 20 numbers.

Jorge Lloret says

Hi,

I assumed that the order must be preserved so the solution is

2023=17*7*17=(9+8)x7x(6+5+4+3-2+1)

Happy New Year, Jorge

Bruce Hartman says

So can it be done? It asks if you can do it “in that order?” But the solution has the numbers not descending 9-1…

My World Their Way says

Yes, here is one solution (9+8)x7x(6+5+4+3-2+1). One of the commentator has also given another solution.

Katie says

I have a student who solved the math puzzle differently.

(9+8) x 7 x [{(6-5)+4} x 3 + (2×1)]

My World Their Way says

Great ! Thank you so much for sharing another solution to this problem.
