If you’re looking for an engaging activity to do with your child or students, try our STEM Scavenger Hunt! We have designed this activity to teach kids about the different branches of science and engineering through hands-on activities. We know that kids are naturally curious and love to learn, so if you give them the chance they will love it ! Therefore, it’s best to engage your children in STEM at an early age to get them interested.
WHAT IS A STEM SCAVENGER HUNT
A stem scavenger hunt is a fun way to explore STEM concepts in the classroom or at home. In a game of STEM scavenger hunt you will be challenged to look for all things STEM-related, such as simple machines, pulleys, numbers that can be decimalized (e.g., 3 1/2), something that uses gears, or something you would use to communicate.
What can children learn from a STEM scavenger hunt?
Scavenger hunt gives kids a hands-on opportunity to learn problem-solving. It helps children retain information by physically reinforcing teachings taught by parents or teachers. Through this activity, they learn and explore, solve issues, test new ideas, and experience friendship, cooperation, and teamwork.
Scavenger hunts themed around STEM topics are a fun way to explore and notice how simple machines or mathematical patterns can be used in everyday life. Kids will be able to relate engineering and science concepts to the world around them, which is one of the most important skills they need for success in today’s technology-driven society.
Science is all around us, from our homes to our neighborhood playgrounds. In fact, we use a wide range of household appliances every day that rely on simple machines and basic science concepts, without ever noticing it. It is very likely that you have been using pizza cutters without realizing that they are excellent examples of wheels and axles in the kitchen.
Likewise, most floss containers use a metal wedge, another simple machine, to separate small pieces of floss each time you use them. Playground ramps are examples of inclined planes. See-saws, tongs, scissors, and nail clippers are all examples of simple machines, levers.
Consider, similarly, fibonacci numbers in pinecones, decimal numbers when filling up a car with gas, or different shapes and technology used in bridge construction.
The possibilities are endless to create your own engineering scavenger hunt!
