Learn Spellings with a Fortune Teller

Are you struggling to get your kids to practice their spelling words ? I don’t blame them. After all, memorizing and writing a set of words everyday can get a tad bit boring. But, what if I told you that there is an exciting and interactive method to do that. All they need is a fortune teller to learn multiple words at the same time and practice their spellings. You can use it to practice sight words and spellings and even cvc words for young kids. It’s that simple and versatile. So, whatever you call them, a fortune teller or a cootie catcher, they make it easy and interesting to practice spellings on the go also.

How to make the Fortune Teller

To make the fortune teller or cootie catcher, all you need is a square piece of paper and pen.

Fold the paper to make a fortune teller using the step by step instructions given below.

Write 4 of the longest words your kids want to practice on the outside flap of the fortune teller.

Flip the fortune teller over, and on each of the sections write one of the eight spelling words.

Open each flap and write an encouraging or silly statement in each section. Something like “You are a SPELLING BEE Star”, “You are SMART” or “Way to Go “.

Fold it all back up and you are ready to play.

How to Play

Player 1 asks the player 2 to pick a word from the outside of the fortune teller catcher.

The player 1 then opens the fortune teller the opposite direction, for each letter of the chosen word.

When the word is done being spelled, player 1 ask the player 2 to pick a new word from the inner sections.

Again, the player 1 spell this word out, opening the fortune teller opposite directions for each letter.

When the second word is done being spelled, player 1 asks player 2 to pick a final word.

Player 1 then opens the flap for that word and read the phrase written below!

Encourage your kids to take turns going back and forth, choosing different words each time. This way they can practice multiple words at the same time and they can see all of the different phrases written under the flaps.

The best part of these fortune teller to learn spellings is that you can make multiples of them with different words. After all, you only need paper to make them. Moreover, you can carry them anywhere so that you can keep practicing.
