Today marks the 50th anniversary of Earth day. And more than ever, this year we need to teach our kids about the important role we all play in protecting and taking care of our earth. Recycle and reuse in still an important step towards bringing a difference in our environment. So, we decided to emphasize this idea with an easy and interesting craft for celebrating earth day. It can hopefully delight and leave a positive impression on our kids.
Materials
- Get the printable here or draw your own.
- Glue, Scissor, pencil
- Large sheet of paper
If you draw your own pictures, make sure that both pictures are of the same height and width.

Cut the pictures from the printable and color them.

Divide each picture into 1-cm sections by drawing a line on its backside. Label each picture and its section with a consecutive number. Here, I labeled the picture with earth drawing as 1 and each section as A, B. C and so on.

Trim each picture into 1-cm strips and keep them in proper sequence and separate from each other.
Now, take a large piece of paper of the same height and length equal to the total length of both the pictures.

Mark the large piece of paper into 1 cm section and fold all the sections into accordian fold. Label each alternate fold with numbers 1 and 2.

Arrange the strips of picture 1 and glue them in order into the folds marked as 1.

Similarly, glue the strips from picture 2 in order onto their respective fold.
Stand the paper up and look at it from different angle. You should see a different picture when you look at it from left and right.

Extension
Start by learning about the history behind this environmental movement here.
In honor of Earth Day, encourage them to make their own craft using recycleable materials.
Ask kids to brainstorm 22 ideas on how everyone in the family can contribute toward a greener earth. Write them down on a piece of paper and work toward making those changes in the coming months. Here are some of the ideas to get started
- Make toys using cardboard
- Buy or sew a reusable lunch box
- Avoid plastic in kitchen by using glass jars
- Carrying cloth bags for grocery
- Starting a compost
- Set your clothes to line dry in summer
- Grow your own veggies
- Use glass straws instead of plastic ones.
I would love to hear your ideas and contribution towards caring for our Earth, lets empower and encourage each other.
