The 6 – 0 = 81 Matchstick Puzzle

If you are looking for ideas to engage your kids in some fun and brain bending activities, then you should definitely try out the matchstick puzzles. These lateral thinking puzzles have been there for a while and have always captivated the interest of people of all ages. In this simple 6 – 0 = 81 matchstick puzzle, you have to think outside of the box to solve the equation by moving just two matchsticks. A simple solution is to move the two matchsticks in the number 1 to make the equation 8 + 0 = 8 but can you find the other solution ?

It is easy and quick to set up and require very basic material, a matchstick. In case you don’t have a matchstick, you can use toothpicks or pretzel sticks. So, let’s get started. Place the matchsticks as shown below in the puzzle. By just moving two matchstick, correct the equation 6 – 0 = 81.

Give it a try and let me know your answer in the comments section below.

Step 1

To solve the 6 – 0 = 81 matchstick puzzle, first move one matchstick from the equal sign to the minus sign. Now, the minus sign becomes the equal sign and the equal sign is becomes the minus sign.

Step 2

Next, move the matchstick on the upper right side from the number 0 horizontally in the middle so that the number 0 becomes 9.

That’s the solution ! Hmm I know, you don’t think so ? Are you sure ? Remember, I told you to think outside of the box. Did you change your perspective. How about if you look at it upside down. That’s the correct equation 18 – 9 = 9.

8+0=8 Just move the two matchsticks from the 1 to make the first number an 8 and stick the other one over the subtraction sign! Gotta put it somewhere! 😉

Hahaha you are right Sandra. That is a possible solution but as I mentioned in the blog post to find the other solution other than the 8 + 0 = 8. Do you want to give it a try and find another way to correct the equation.
